Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlements Systems has introduced gh-link e-Commerce, an Internet payment gateway that allows Ghanaians to use their local bank ATM cards for online purchases.
Previously, only MasterCard- and Visa-branded payment cards could be used for e-commerce, according to a citifmonline.com report.
The introduction is part of the government’s strategy to develop a “cash-lite” economy, GHIPSS CEO Archie Hesse told Citi Business News.
“It is restricted to Ghana, however a couple of [in-country] Web merchants that have affiliation with some international Web merchants in the U.K. and in America,” Hesse said. The partnerships will allow cardholders to pay for international purchases in Ghana’s currency, the cedi.
Cardholders must preregister with GHIPSS in order to participate in gh-link and must also authenticate themselves to the service before using the platform, the report said.
